31st Stamp in the Black Heritage Series Artist Kazuhiko Sano took a 1908 photograph of Charles W. Chesnutt and created a portrait of intelligence and dignity. Charles W. Chesnutt (1858-1932), was a major innovative writer and singular voice among turn-of-the-century authors who questioned color segregation in American culture. Known for his novels, such as The Marrow of Tradition, and short stories, like those found in The Conjure Woman, Chesnutt explored the color line that had been stifling the American life style for years.
